Is there anyway to extract a height map from SWG directory and edit it? I mean I see people doing new planets so is it possible to edit existing height maps and have them work in-game?

I would be interested to learn this as well!

Maybe this would help:
http://review.swgemu.com/gitweb?p=Tools.git;a=tree;f=SWGHeightDump;h=b32cb4c956402c8c02dfcc127f63b8682b6e316b;hb=HEAD

Though I've never actually used it or know anything about it.

I released some heightmaps here: http://www.modthegalaxy.com/forums/thread-cities-skylines

Tools will also be available in the future to generate them. Do note though that they can't trivially be imported again in most cases - the pre-CU terrains are generated with procedural rules rather than heightmaps.
