The original maps managed to attract quite a following, so by popular request here's the first update! Plenty more planned for subsequent releases if the demand continues.

New since 1.0:

- Resolution increased from 1024x1024 to 4096x4096
- Flora and cities rendered
- Constant LOD

Coming soon:

For the final 2.0 release within a few months:

- Full resolution 16k x 16k release with client patch utility to enable it. This is already done:

- Improved water - currently it just looks flat from directly above with the orthographic projection
- Bug fix for clipped Theed building

Coming soon™:

- Shadows and further improved lighting (this will take longer due to difficulties in how the map is constructed)
- Possibly some tweaks that will trade off 100% accuracy with making the maps a bit easier on the eye
- Fog - can't be done like in SWG but something should be possible

Install:

If you have the old maps installed, remove them from your texture override directory.

Move sytners_sat_maps_2.tre to your SWG directory and add it to swgemu_live.cfg, e.g:

Troubleshooting:

There is a known issue where some people experience the maps tiling. Hopefully we can route cause this, but some potential fixes are:

- Make sure you deleted the old maps!
- Force your client to use shader model 2.0 (they do work for me with 1.4 however).

Download

Mirrors to follow.

P.S.: Will the ticket purchase windows be resized as well to match the satellite UI view?

It's amazing how natural the terrain feels when you're playing, and how unnatural it clearly is with a clear satellite image!

Oops, that's what happens when you only test stuff with an offline client. Fixed thanks <3

How about a browser version using the Google Maps API? Recording my browser really kills the performance but:

This augmented with server info could be pretty neat :).

By Default my live.cfg file says maxSearchPriority=31, do I alter this field to 26? Or add an additional shared file section with the maxSearchPriority?

What server are you playing on?

But, regardless, check the updated install instructions here: http://www.swgemu.com/forums/showthread.php?t=186414&p=1356693&viewfull=1#post1356693

Wish there was a way you could see a real-time map of all world objects/buildings on a server.

Nice job!

I could make that as a server admin tool but not possible for in-game unfortunately. The best that could be done is for server admins to automate map generation at particular intervals and push updates to clients (or make it available using the Google Maps API).

Would it be possible to get the link to the Google Maps API version you set up? would be cool just to scrub through the maps and see everything.

Also, with the Google Maps version, could that somehow be jacked into a server/character to give you live updates of where you are on that map? kind of like the ingame map, but out of game :p

Lastly, would it be possible to overlay the overlay map on top of all that too? - That would be awesome. I could just imagine having that set up on 2nd monitor, and always seeing where I am, what's around me, etc.

I'm just lacking the bandwidth to make it public really - perhaps I can talk to Davin about getting it hosted here on a subdirectory if we have the capacity.

Tracking your in-game position in the browser would be possible as would doing live partial updates of the map as player cities etc change.

Overlay map is possible but I don't have any particular plans of doing it for now unless there's a big demand.

If people on servers heard that you're saying it's possible, they would bamboozle you into making this happen. Having a map like what we spoke about would pretty much be amazing, IMO.

Update: What do you need bandwidth for? is it for the communication between the game server and the google maps api?

I was just talking about why I don't have a public link to my current demo version - each map is a few hundred MB and I have very little webspace/quota available on my meagre hosting.

Thanks to Davin, you can try the demo at http://maps.modthegalaxy.com.

Only Corellia is available at the moment.

If anyone wants to play with the source/improve it/try and add in communication with servers for live data - please download the demo source and do whatever you can and share it! :)

The demo was made possible by the great work at https://github.com/iamcal/World-of-MapCraft. Without it I would probably not have got around to doing this - all credit to them on the web front!
